Costly Convention Centers Lose to Starbucks

How much does it cost to exhibit at a trade show it a large city? Let's see: registration fees, plane tickets, hotel rooms, sales materials, golf for the best clients...the costs seem to spiral out of control. Now, a trade show can be as close as your nearest Starbucks.

The Chain Drug Marketing Association (CDMA) presents its third annual Virtual Trade Show this week. The CDMA members represent over 8,000 pharmacy outlets in chains of 50 stores or less. Vendors design virtual booths on the CDMA's website. A typical booth includes images and electronic "brochures". Show attendees can speak with participants over the phone, e-mail, or by using a chat system. They may place orders on-line, discuss the latest merchandising recommendations, and even play virtual golf.

Today, Ryan Kelsey of Time Cricket mans his booth while we enjoy a cup of coffee at the local Starbucks. He uses the wireless internet connection, or "Wi-Fi", to communicate with the buyers from the pharmacies. Time Cricket promotes specialty skin care lotions and wipes. This show format offers several benefits over a traditional face to face environment:

1. More buyers attend. Many find the expense and time commitment is a fraction of a typical show. Better yet, managers can login from anywhere at any time. Even though this same association hosts a face to face event every spring, attendance for the virtual shows is regularly 30% greater.

2. Small vendors receive better treatment. Kelsey proclaims, "Our skin care line for Hispanic/Latina women deserves the same booth location as an industry goliath offering products to a more general audience. Instead of being hidden in a corner at a traditional show, we receive a prime location alongside the largest firms at the show."

3. Information is more current. He adds, "Nothing is more important to buyers than proof a product sells quickly at a healthy margin. By the time any quantities of brochures are printed, they are already obsolete. Since we are on-line for this trade show, I can share new product/pricing information as soon as it happens."

"The best part of this virtual show is how nicely it wraps up. By the end, we already have received the orders online and I don't have to pack up and make a mad dash for the airport. Instead, I can enjoy dinner with my wife. How can you beat that?"
